Our conscience is the voice within us us that prompts us to duty. It is the inner voice that convicts us of sin. It is the inner sense of awareness of right from wrong. But our consciences do not operate in a vacuum. They are influenced by what we put in our minds, they are shaped by our environment, by our choices and the suggestions of others.
So is it always safe to trust your conscience?
Yes and NO.
If your conscience is shaped by God’s word, sensitive to the Holy Spirit, conditioned by right choices, and influenced by godly counsel, it can be trusted.
But, if your conscience is defiled by disobedience, seared by sin, influenced by compromising Christians and conditioned by faulty choices, it is unreliable.
Instead, open your heart to the Holy Spirit and let him shape your conscience. Fill your mind with God’s Word and let it hold your conscience. Let your life be guided by a sanctified conscience today.
